"An extraordinary year that culminated in an event so spectacular, it brought together families, teachers, and students, and rallied the whole community."

- Thomas Rabone, Principal, Maple Hill Middle School, Castleton, N.Y.

An extraordinary curriculum prepares students for the concert.

The program provides unparalleled resources, is compatible with Orff and other systems, and meets or exceeds national and regional standards. Collaboration with composers and performers, innovative materials and methods, and unprecedented participation in orchestra rehearsals and performances, propel students to remarkable heights. The program is intended for whole grades or classes rather than select students and, at the teacher’s discretion, may incorporate or replace existing plans.

Class Activities

Class activities include singing, playing melodic, percussive, and possibly MIDI instruments, listening, analyzing, and learning musical concepts, creative writing, acting, musical composition, drawing, collaborative and participatory learning (an understatement in this case!), and thematic units.

Thematic Units

The Concert Curriculum can be used as the basis for standards-based learning in a variety of non-music subjects such as Math and English. Classes in the dramatic and visual arts may also be involved. Indeed, the more the whole school participates, the better.

Professional Development

The program provides teachers with a powerful tool chest of
materials and methodology, along with assistance and training.

Contemporary Approach

An innovative new approach to classroom music teaching is made available should the teacher wish to use it. Based on the tenets of contemporary popular music production, it taps into the students’ musical interests, and accelerates classroom learning. Learn more...

Collaboration

Through MUSICORPS, RIME’s network of specially-trained musicians, a composer-in-residence nurtures original student material and incorporates it into the orchestral score, and at least one performer-in-residence (who may be the composer or a member of the orchestra) assists the teacher and works with students throughout the year, helping to prepare them for their orchestral performance.

"I taught my whole curriculum through this piece."

                  – Dorothy McGuire, elementary school music teacher
