Students participate in high-level musical events rather than observe them from afar.
An oasis of arts organizations often exists near schools that would enjoy tremendous benefits through partnership.
Participatory Partnerships
Regional arts organizations often include highly-trained professional musicians eager to participate in collaborations with local school districts. "Participatory partnerships," in which students participate in what it is that the arts organization actually does, facilitate genuine collaboration. Through participatory partnerships with orchestras, venues, recording studios, and other organizations, schools may deliver educational experiences beyond what they could provide on their own.
While participatory partnerships engender a love for the arts and the creative process that comes only through hands-on experience, students learn a lot more than music. Entrée into the professional arena, the achievement of ambitious goals, and collaboration with highly-trained experts, uncork potential. Overall performance escalates, discipline improves, and students realize that their most ambitious dreams are possible, provided they work hard to achieve them. With access to resources and support, professional development, and enhanced institutional recognition, teachers benefit as well.
Schools with limited resources
For schools with limited resources, participatory partnerships provide special benefits. Although a growing body of research indicates that students involved in the arts perform better academically than students not involved in the arts, with the greatest boost occurring for students from disadvantaged circumstances, access to the arts is typically provided to those already excelling or otherwise advantaged.
Participatory partnerships that bring rich resources from regional arts organizations into low-resource schools transcend traditional barriers, and provide robust educational experiences to those students who have the greatest need and the most to gain.
